Learning Objectives

  1. Explain How Socio-Cultural Influences Impact Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Development.
  2. Identify The Ways Gold Standard OCD Treatment is not Inclusive to People of all Backgrounds.
  3. List Three or More Anti-Opression Therapy Principles When Working with Clients Who Have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Using A Social Justice Framework.

Workshop Description

This intermediate-level, 2-hour interactive workshop explores the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) through a justice-based lens, centering the ways socio-cultural systems shape the development and lived experience of individuals with OCD. While Exposure and Ritual Prevention Therapy (ExRP) and other gold standard treatments are considered evidence-based, they often assume a level of cultural neutrality and neuronormativity that can inadvertently exclude clients from marginalized backgrounds.

Through the use of case vignettes, breakout discussions, and Q & A sessions, attendees will learn how dominant narratives of OCD treatment are shaped by majority culture and systemic forces. Attendees will gain tools for identifying limitations in current treatment models and incorporating social justice ExRP treatment principles, such as centering client agency, reducing power dynamics in OCD therapy, neurodivergent affirming care strategies, and dismantling pathologizing norms, to offer more inclusive and liberatory care.
